Canon Point: post canon
Gender & Sex: male
Age: 18
Birthdate/Sign: Not canon! Scorpio. 11/19. (year 84 not that that means anything on Earth).
Scorpios are fiercely logical, sensitive, and intense. They feel emotions strongly, and deeply, though their calm demeanor may at first throw you off. Though Sokka lives in a world where he is surrounded by people who can do impossible and amazing things, he clings tightly to logic and science to explain it rather than the faith and belief others seem to throw around so easily. Because of his passion for science, Sokka is also much more learned than the other people of his same background, and he cares immensely about things making sense. Scorpios are outspoken and quick to upset. Though Sokka defaults to an almost placid, dry personality, it takes almost nothing to get him going. He is wildly creative and thinks of plans and is a solid inventor, as many Scorpios are.
Scorpio marks tenacity and willpower, and they never truly give up. Sokka is the one among the group who keeps them going, who gives them peptalks and “therapy,” and would never ever let them quit. When he disappears to train with the sword master in the Fire Nation, his friends lament the loss of his humor and upbeat nature. Scorpio, though often acridly witty and sarcastic, have a deep underlying silly side. This comes out whenever Sokka or one of his friends needs a distraction. Or just when he thinks someone could use some cheering up. Though Sokka may at first seem almost standoffish he cares for others deeply, and wants to help even his newest of friends. However, like the scorpion, Sokka is not quick to trust, and always has an ear to the ground in case of betrayal. Because of this, Scorpio can appear paranoid and unstable. Sokka often winds stories of conspiracy theories vast and wide, and does feel as though people are after him. This is not without founding, however, since for most of his life the world has been at war and his mother died as a result when he was very young.
Sokka is resourceful to a fault, and never backs down from a challenge, even if he's scared. He's very protective and will do anything for his friends. However, once a Scorpio dislikes you it isn't easy to change his mind. Sokka finds himself overly critical of anyone who threatens the status quo of his life or one of his friends. Especially his sister and defacto brother, Aang. He gets over this though it isn't an easy or quick process with Zuko, who has tried to kill him and his friends on many an occasion. But his boundless capacity for forgiveness should also be noted. Scorpio are extremely complex, especially when it comes to their emotions, and their observations should never be discounted. Though their worldviews are often extreme, their observation skills are far superior than one might expect. While Sokka portrays himself as the silly everyman, he is very much in-tune with the goings on around him and is aware of his surroundings 24/7. This makes Scorpio an excellent detective, and Sokka loves solving mysteries or putting together puzzles. Being the logical creature that he is, he delights in making sense out of chaos, and his innate intuition leads him to the right answer almost every time.
Tattoo: Inside of upper left arm.
Suitability: Though Sokka is 15/16 in-series I will be playing him post-series where he is 16/17 canonically. He will be 18 for the purposes of Zodion. Because his mother died and his father was almost always away with the other warriors of his tribe, Sokka has had to fend for himself most of his life, making him not very childlike in tendency. This is also a product of his world in which his sister and himself have had to grow up very quickly. He has always taken care of her and helped take care of the other children at the South Pole. Sokka's canonical relationship with Suki also suggests pretty blatantly that he is not a virgin. Also because Sokka is from kind of a weird, vaguely ancient China based world, the age of adulthood is perceived to be much lower. And the tribe he comes from is based on the Inuit heritage which I have cited above.
In such a society, children are married off very young, usually by arranged marriages. He is already considered a man by his societal standards, said to be age 14. Water Tribe boys undergo a rite of passage called “ice dodging” which is meant to test their physical strength as well as build wisdom and trust. Because Hakoda, Sokka's father, was at war when he was 14, Sokka goes when he is 16 with his dad's friend Bato. He is excited to complete this ritual and truly become a man in the eyes of the people of his tribe and paints his face in ceremonial warrior fashion to denote the occasion. Ice dodging is meant to prepare young men for war, as well, though Sokka has essentially had these warrior traits since his mother's death.
Though in many ways Sokka is still an adolescent, because of the nature of his world and the culture he was raised in, for all intents and purposes he is a man, and I will play him as such in Zodion.
Power: Sokka has been training for war practically since conception, but he has no canon supernatural abilities. Within the confines of Zodion and Sokka's given water sign, he will be able to summon sea creatures. At first small, then possibly bigger after a while.
Personality: Sokka is loud, and doesn't hesitate to share his opinion, but he gets nervous quite easily. If his friends or family are truly in danger, however, his true colors show and his bravery comes forth. He is a strong warrior at heart and will do anything to protect his sister and his friends. He is loyal to a fault, though initially suspicious of new people. Master Pian Dao describes Sokka as having, "A heart as strong as a lion-turtle, and twice as big." Though he can often seem petty or jealous of his sister's water-bending abilities, he only wants to be able to help and as he learns his own worth his confidence builds.
He does this by adding to the team with his extreme deductive skill. For such a young man, he really is quite intelligent and mature, he just covers it by being silly a lot of the time. It's really a scapegoat for some of his heavier emotions and it serves the double benefit of cheering his friends. When he goes off to train with Pian Dao his friends mourn his leaving and begin trying to make "Sokka jokes" in his absence. Though he often thinks of himself as the "extra" having no bending abilities, he's pleased to find that he really has a place in the Gaang and is an integral part of the reason they function.
When the Gaang has a brief stay over in a village full of people from the Earth Kingdom, Sokka finds his niche talking science with their leader, who is forced to develop weapons for the Fire Nation. Sokka is revealed to be the developer of the War Balloon employed by the Fire Nation later on in the series, because the Fire Army takes it after the weapons designer and himself write the blueprints. Other than this though, Sokka truly has a penchant for physics and regards logic above all else. Though Avatar has a simplistic world construct, Sokka seems to comprehend things at a higher mechanical level, and Aang often refers to him as a genius (though sometimes in jest).
Though he's silly and puts a lot of love into his jokes and storytelling, Sokka can be a really intense guy. He was brought up to be a warrior above all else, and always protect those weaker than himself. In Book 1 we see the Water Tribe children all look up to him and rely on him for advice, and he begins prepping them in case they need to go to war some day. He's an immensely caring individual and though he would support the decision to kill another person if it would benefit the world overall he also has a huge heart and capacity for forgiveness (see: Zuko).
Most of all, he supports his friends and family no matter what they decide to do, and though he can be petty or argumentative, his love and desire for them to be happy will always supersede his urge to be right all the time.
Back in Book One, at the beginning of this story, Sokka had a fair amount of growing up to do. Having never ventured out of his village, and not being as open-minded as his sister, he ran into a few issues in the outside world. Having been raised in pretty much an Inuit culture where men are warriors and women are homemakers, he is initially limited in his belief of women in other roles. But early on, he meets the Kyoshi warriors, protectors of a small island in the Earth Kingdom. Upon learning they are all women, Sokka is disappointed, but quickly develops feelings for Suki, their leader. The girls teach him a little humility and from that point on he only improves in regards to treating women as his equals. By the end of series he has great respect for women, especially Suki and Katara.
In a similar way, Sokka starts out being very dismissive of other races and cultures. In a typical ignorant fashion, everything unknown becomes 'stupid' and everything familiar defaults to 'superior.' Aang gets him out of this habit as they travel, pointing out the merits and purpose of the things people do in foreign lands. Even when they don't make sense, much to Sokka's chagrin, he comes to accept these differences and even welcome them. In Book 3 he even becomes especially fascinated with the culture of the Fire people and when Aang accidentally enrolls in Fire School, Sokka and Katara pose as his parents. This disguise is a recurring theme that Sokka calls by the moniker 'Wang Fire' and uses it to council and cheer up the Gaang. Then he enlists the help of Master Pian Dao, a universally renowned swordsmaster, and pretends to be from the Fire nation himself. Though his master is not fooled, again Sokka learns to be humble and to accept and learn from people of different origins to himself. This is even shown in his respect for Zuko—reluctant at first, but then it builds and he becomes proud of the man, and now Fire Lord, he's become.
As for Sokka's views on killing; they do certainly differ from that of his friends. Other than possibly Toph (at times). Aang is completely pacifistic and his sister is not far behind, though she has an unpredictably merciless streak, but Sokka is different. He sees things logically, in black and white, and when you are at war causalities are inevitable. This point of view developed from him idealizing war, idealizing his father, and idealizing being a warrior, full-stop. It was all Sokka was ever brought up to be, and all that he ever truly wanted. He doesn't even consider another option until Aang presents to him a peaceful alternative. At first this blows Sokka's mind. The Fire Nation brought death to his village, simple quid pro quo stated they too should experience loss. But when he's placed in that position, he moves away from his nature and embraces Aang's peaceful tactics. Though this wasn't a simple or quick process by any means. He is similar to his sister in that he can get extremely heated in the moment, and make rash decisions. However, when Katara tries to murder the murderer of their mother, he supports the cause against it. It takes him a while to understand what taking the higher ground truly means, but now he understands and will avoid death in all but a final resort.
At the end of Book One, they all travel to the North Pole to visit the other Water Tribe. Sokka has never been there and he falls in love with their beautiful princess, Yue. She taught him and continues to teach him many things about this word, after her death having become the moon; she reaches out to help the Gaang when she can. It can be said Princess Yue had a part in Sokka changing on all of these fronts: racism, sexism, and killing. She is in a lot of ways his first girlfriend, and he respects her a great deal, especially after her sacrifice. The sacrifice itself, and the way in which she becomes the moon, should be impossible for Sokka's logical brain, but he has no choice other than to accept it—otherwise she truly would be lost to him forever. And finally, her death brings clarity to what it really means to take someone's life. Though his mother was murdered, Sokka was very young, and he says when he thinks of his mother all he sees is Katara's face. Not even his mother's death affects him as sharply as Yue's.

Sokka didn't know where he was or how he'd gotten here. He didn't have any way of knowing he wasn't completely alone, and the thought weighed on him immensely. Beginning to poke at the buttons on the communicator device he'd been given, Sokka wondered if he could use it to find his sister. Or Aang. Even Zuko would be a welcome face in this strange, strange place.
It seemed inhabited, at least, which was good, but he wasn't quick to trust them. He had been abducted, however nicely, and it was up to him to figure it out and get himself home. The letter from the Twelve scared him, but he chose not to think on it too much. There was no way he would still be here for the consequences of not playing along.
Not that it did much to quell the rising panic in his tummy. Even if he was the man with the plan, almost always, without his friends he might not have the wherewithal to pull it off. They were a team, and even this idle separation bothered him immensely.
He began button-mashing frustratedly, screaming at the device. “Call Suki! Call Aang! Call Katara! Call Toph! Call Zuko!!!!!!” he raged, eyes widening as the Zodion natives fixed him with stares. They didn't seem concerned by the scene he was making, probably used to new arrivals by now.
With a sigh, he ducked into an alleyway and continued to try to make this stupid thing work. He might be here a while, he resolved miserably, so he'd eventually work it out or die trying. Which, his mind supplied, might be a welcome reprieve from whatever this creepy village had in store for him.
